On Thursday, Allie parked her 4Runner in the MBH parking lot. She rather liked how quaint their building was with its clapboard siding and wrap-around porch. No one looking at the exterior would imagine the roughhewn and muscly crew who worked there.
She glanced into her rearview mirror and checked her makeup. She didn’t know why she’d bothered. She rarely wore any. She’d used a light hand that morning, not wanting to look like she was trying too hard.
No one expected her today. She’d scheduled a meeting for the next day with the team she’d observed and photographed. She needed releases signed and wanted to show them the shots she was considering submitting along with her writeup. As well, she had video she wanted to share with them.
And then there was her date tomorrow night with Animal. Or at least, she thought it was a date. Maybe it was just an invitation for a fuckfest. Before he’d handed her into the SUV that took her back to her vehicle in the park, he’d asked to see her when she returned to Bear Lodge, whatever that meant.
She’d brought an outfit to wear if they went to dinner and sexy lingerie if they headed straight to a hotel. After they’d been met on the highway with transports for the team and the Tibbets cousins, she’d realized that one of the vehicles was there expressly for her. She’d glanced around to find Animal loading his pack into another vehicle.
He’d frowned and approached her, but they’d had an audience, and again, he was gruffly direct when he’d spoken. “When will you be in Bear Lodge?”
“Friday, I think,” she’d said, feeling breathless and little unmoored. Her mind had been filled with this man for the past two days. The thought that they were about to be separated had made her feel anxious.
He’d reached for her hand and tugged her body closer. Leaning toward her, he’d looked into her eyes. “Friday.”
She’d nodded, reading into his hard stare that he planned to pick up where they’d left off in the early morning hours. But maybe she was reading more into that one word than he’d intended.
Now, she was having second, third, and fourth thoughts about her early arrival. She really should have waited to come, but over the last days, she’d been unable to concentrate. Sleep was impossible. Every time she lay down, memories of what had happened between her and Animal flooded her mind. She’d refused to dig her vibrator out from under her bathroom sink. Only the real thing would do. She only hoped he didn’t feel like she was stalking him, pushing too hard. Men tended to like to do the chasing, or so she’d read in Cosmo.
Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her camera bag and the big brown envelope, holding copies of her photos and a thumb drive, and stepped out of her vehicle.
Entering the office, she heard the doorbell chime and glanced around. She walked to the long polished counter that separated the lobby from a group of desks.
